The Atlantic torpedo (Sidderrog in Dutch) is a large ray with a large paddle-shaped caudal fin. The subcircular disc is broad and truncate along the front. The eyes are small and set relatively far apart. The short snout is located anterior to the eyes. Both dorsal fins are located on the tail. The first dorsal fin is distinctly larger than the second dorsal fin. The spiracles have smooth margins with no tentacles or papillae. The electric organs are located on the pectoral fins to either side of the head, giving the skin a honeycomb-like appearance. The Atlantic torpedo was originally described as Torpedo nobiliana by Bonaparte (1835). Its genus name, Torpedo, comes from the Latin word 'torpidus' meaning numbness in reference to the effect of the electric organ.

The machine was acquired August 2009 when Electrical Engineering was doing a clean out.
History prior to arriving to UCC
It was probably one of the EE lab machines.
UCC machine history
After a number of unsuccessful attempts to install OpenSolaris, Debian was installed and the machine set up on the UCC network. Coincidently, it is an UltraSPARC II running Debian, set up right next to an Intel P4 running OpenSolaris (Persephone).

Debian testing (squeeze). Upgraded from lenny as X didn't work. It's still prone to graphics corruption, and iceweasel bus errors on startup.

Future plans for the machine
Very little, it's not very powerful and will probably die a painful death the second that the club finds something better.
